How Often Should Fire Extinguishers Be Refilled & Serviced?

A fire extinguisher is only useful if it works when you need it. That means keeping it inspected, serviced and refilled on schedule. Here is the maintenance routine Power Safe recommends for commercial and industrial premises.

Recommended schedule

• Monthly visual check (by your staff): confirm the pressure gauge is in the green, the safety pin and seal are intact, the unit is undamaged and clearly accessible.
• Annual professional service: a trained technician inspects, weighs and certifies every extinguisher.
• Refilling after use: any extinguisher that has been discharged — even partially — must be refilled immediately.
• Periodic refilling by type: as a general guide, CO₂ and dry-powder extinguishers are refilled/tested on a defined cycle, and cylinders undergo hydrostatic pressure testing every few years.

Signs an extinguisher needs attention

• Pressure gauge needle in the red zone.
• Missing safety pin or broken tamper seal.
• Corrosion, dents or a damaged hose/nozzle.
• An expired service/refill tag.
