For patients who need long-term oxygen at home, there are two main options: medical oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators. Each has advantages, and many households use a combination of both.

Medical oxygen cylinders

Cylinders deliver pure, IP-grade medical oxygen (99.5%+) at a steady flow and work without electricity — making them essential as a backup during power cuts and for high-flow needs. The trade-offs are that they need periodic refilling and are heavier to move.

Oxygen concentrators

A concentrator draws in room air and filters out nitrogen to deliver concentrated oxygen (typically 90–95%) continuously. It never needs refilling — just electricity — which makes it convenient and cost-effective for everyday use. However, it stops working in a power failure and usually delivers lower maximum flow than a cylinder.

Which should you choose?

• Cylinder — best for high flow, portability, and as an emergency backup.
