Dissolved Acetylene (DA Gas): The Fuel Gas for Cutting & Welding
July 14, 2026 · 1 min read

Dissolved Acetylene — usually called DA gas — is the fuel gas of choice for oxy-fuel welding and flame cutting because it produces the hottest flame of any common gas: around 3,100 °C when burned with oxygen. That intense heat makes it ideal for cutting thick steel, welding, brazing and metal hardening.
Why acetylene needs special cylinders
Pure acetylene is unstable under pressure, so it cannot simply be compressed like other gases. Instead, cylinders are filled with a porous mass soaked in acetone; the acetylene dissolves safely into the acetone — hence “dissolved acetylene”. This is why DA cylinders must always be:
- Stored and used upright (so acetone stays in the cylinder).
- Kept away from heat and sparks — acetylene is highly flammable.
- Used with the correct flashback arrestors and regulators.
Common applications
- Oxy-acetylene cutting of steel plate and sections.
- Gas welding of steel, cast iron and copper.
- Brazing and silver soldering.
- Flame heating for bending and hardening.
